I checked the numbers on the block of my truck's engine and found that it is a 1955-57 chevy 235. Does the engine from these years have solid or hydraulic lifters?

Solid. You should be able to hear them ticking. If you change them though you will have to change the cam too.

Thanks, Tab. Do you know a good site for steps to adjusting the solid lifters on the 235 engine? Maybe mine don't need adjusting based on your comment. I do hear them ticking. Is that normal for the properly adjusted solid lifters?

The 1957 235's matched with automatics were equipped with hydraulic lifters.

Man those boogers are expensive!

they should do a little clicking, if they don't they're too tight, but if they're pretty noisey you may have poor oiling to the top - if you don't have a shop manual, Kieth nicely put one online for us section 6page7

Here is a set of instructions for adjusting valve lash on 261/235/261 truck engines.

All 216/235/261 Chevrolet truck engines came with mechanical (solid) lifters (some of the later truck blocks were made to accept hydraulic lifters but they came with solid/mechanical lifters). As stated above, from 1954 onwards, the 235 Chevrolet automobile engine had hydraulic lifters (1953 PowerGlide engines did, too).

261 engines from Canadian Pontiacs had hydraulic lifters. I am not certain if later 235 truck engines with automatic transmissions came with hydraulic lifters (they did not in 1954/55).
