Don't stay away so long - we need the support of guys like you that know what they are doing!! It helps out us noogies! Er-r-r, maybe that wasn't the right word! It helps out us rookies - for sure! We have had the rain, but now it seems dry again. I can hold out though - it's almost September - ah, yes fall is on the way. So do we know for sure - did Edmunds make a side cover? I can't ever remember seeing one. Jaime should know who all made side covers - where the heck is he when you need him? In the meantime, as I think about it, there may not have been that many side covers made. Barry, I'm kind of like you - I have been so obsessed with finding that one (Fenton) that I really have not paid attention to whom did or didn't make them. Joe

You guys just had to get me thinking about sidecovers, didn't you? Now I'll be saving my lunch money for the next 3 years just so I can buy some stupid old flat piece of aluminum with fins cast in it and holes around the edges. Thanks.

Love to see that shot of the table full of intakes. I can host pictures and post them to this thread if you like... ViejitosCC -- did you manage to put together that speed equipment webpage you mentioned? oh, other makes: Chiles Hartman Peirce Manifold Ellis (someone must have said that, did I miss it?) Multipower There's also some interesting stuff from Gotha. Like the build-your-own intake featured in this thread . Well, maybe a couple of carb stands and a block off plate isn't that interesting. That said, I just got married and have zero budget at the moment. It seems like it'd be pretty easy to toss something similar together out of found parts... Somday I'll have one of those smooth edmunds 2x1s...

You came into a very interesting and longer than usual thread with some great information. I saw that "build your own intake" over on Inliners just last night as I was looking around and even though it isn't shiney and pretty, it is kind of an interesting piece of equipment, and very well done. You got me hung one one comment - I don't think I have ever seen a Chevrolet 6 Ellis intake. I have seen a GMC 6 Ellis intake, and for some reason I thought Ellis was a GMC only intake. I'm probably wrong, but I figured this might be a good time to mention it and find out for sure! Good to have you aboard! Joe

Started a thread about homebuilts on chevytalk but haven't picked up much concrete info. On the Ellis: I don't actually know for sure -- I'm just learning. There is this one that is apparently for an International. Again, I say "apparently" -- the seller doesn't even know for sure. Doesn't look like GMC though... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Clas...198QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem hope linking to that site is ok. Not mine... The names I mention above are a direct result of my reading this post: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...p;page=2&highlight=stovebolt+intakes Admittedly the first guy with the Ellis doesn't say what its for and the second one is on a GMC. Maybe I'm spreading lies. I hope not!

Most of the Ellis intakes I have seen have been for bigger trucks: GMC, International, Dodge (Chrysler flathead 6), etc..
What got my attention was when Tom mentioned Gotha. I have seen very little Gotha stuff in my life, and all of that was for '50's V-8's. (Olds, Pontiac, Mopar) If anyone could post more on Gotha speed equipment for early Chev. 6's, I'm all ears! Pics or scans of a Gotha catalog would be great!

Sort of a poor man's performance line. I'd have to look at some of my old mags to check out if they offered other stuff, can't remember now. They were based out of Harvey, Il on the south side of Chi. so you'd think some of there goodies would be around here. There was an old Deuce coupe around here that had an Olds V-8 with Gotha aluminum valve covers and I believe intake a while back.

So we know at the least that they dealt in other people's stuff and offered their own cheap alternatives...

I've seen some Gotha stuff, but maybe it was actually someone elses products with just the Gotha name cast in it, much like Fenton did to make the D&S intakes?
Bob, I do remember that old '32 hot rod with the Olds in it, and the Gotha covers. I saw it at the Pileup 2 years ago, I believe. Last I read on the HAMB, it was for sale for $35,000 firm. Haven't seen it since, maybe it sold and left the area?

The one in the Tornado catalog looks like a stock manifold that has been split. The Hollywood deep tone is made from scratch.

I'll be using 2 of Tom Langdon's Carter-Webbers. I've invested about 7 hours of filing and smoothing the aluminum welds, but I'm not going for the highly polished look. I like the 'hour glass' transition from the 2 bbl plates to the stock Edelbrock body.

You just know that side cover is hanging from a nail in some weather beaten old shed with a tarp covered 54 Chevy convertible hiding underneath.

Bob | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,513 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,513 | Nice work and interesting approach. Are both the outlets the same diameter? I was curious why there’s no bevel in the added one. Thank’s for posting the Tornado pic’s. Here’s a Tornado style sidecover for the 235/261 that is soon to be born. Have any of you fellow Bolters come up with a good, sound plan for setting up solid linkage on any of the older intakes that are not equipped with solid linkage provisions? I would still like to be able to do that on some of the nice older intakes. Any thoughts or ideas? Joe Here’s what I came up with. A big thanks to Joe for his input, pictures, and testing on a setup that works even better than it looks. Curt B.

Bob Bob,there was a kit you could buy back when that had this outlet,I found this one on ebay.It is/was commen to use a water neck to split a manifold but they are getting hard to find the right one with a 90 degree. The trick on welding cast is to pre heat the piece until red hot and turn your 220 mig all the way up.

On the side cover, will it be cast or machined? There was already a small run of 15 made recently off the original pattern/mold.I talked with the guy that has the pattern and he said he would do another run if there is enough interest.I am trying to spear head this to get it done. The linkage looks great but we need more pics and details, your not getting off that easy.

One is a full donut to work on the bevel with a slightly flared exhaust pipe and the other is a half donut, for lack of a better term, that will work on the flat surface header. If that exhaust pipe is flared slightly, it will work much better than a gasket because it will allow a little "wiggle room", like the other, due to the flare. Most of the muffler shops can get or have both. By using these donuts, you can slip the exhaust pipe around during installation to perfectly align them. It's a better way to get a good installation! I've got a set of Curt's linkage and I will tell you and anybody else that wants to know, it works great! It's a simple design that does the job very nicely. It is well designed and well engineered and looks vintage! Joe
