This is for a 1962 235. I've heard there are other cool alternatives -some still available, some not. Pictures are worth a thousand words!

Some are 216 intakes, but the ports can be opened up to fit the 235-261 head. With a 216 intake you will have to run small base carbs, but some believe the smaller base cuts down on the CFM of intake, thus the vacuum rises and the fuel and air hit the combustion chamber quicker. Good luck on your hunt for an intake! Joe

- D&S (basically a Fenton)
- Ellis (maybe only made as a single?)
- Weiand (I don't have one, missed out on the only one I've ever seen).
Can you think of anymore?

Don't know about later model trucks, but check the clearance if you have a column mount 3-speed. A lot of those intakes would not clear the shifter mechanism on my "50. I ended up with an Edelbrock that just barely cleared(had to grind a hair off one of the shifter arms). A Sharp,Tattersfield, and Edmunds would also clear. My Fenton and Thickstun would not.
Barry,I seem to remember a Weiand at Iola a year or two ago at that guys booth with all the old intakes. His prices are a little scary though. 2 weeks till the big show!!

The only ones I've seen available are the offenhauser and a supercharger on E-bay for over $1000. So... which ones are available today and where can I see pictures of them? Thanks in advance.

You have to look hard and get lucky. None of them are still in production except the Offenhauser. Just as a point of interest, the shape of the Sharp, Edelbrock, Weiand, Edmunds and Tattersfield were kind of "U" shaped and because of that they cleared the shifting arms on trucks with column shifters. These are the ones you need to look for, unless you are running a four speed or a T-5 five speed transmission. You also probably want a 2 x 1 intake as a 3 x 1 could cause clearence problems. Some of the makers of these old intakes did offer a 3 x 1 version, like Nicson. The Edmunds was the only intake set up for water heating the intake. It might be the best choice and I have seen them at swap meets here in Texas and Oklahoma. I've got some pictures of about four table tops of intakes for inline six engines I took at the Pate Swap Meet here in Fort Worth in 2004. The same guy was there in 2005. If you will email me, I can send the pictures to you. It'll blow you mind!!

I had one and sold it to a fellow with a 1950 Chevrolet pickup with a 235 in it and the Edmunds rear water outlet (out of the manifold) hit the shifting forks. So let's eleminate that one from the list!!

#46584 06/24/2005 6:09 AM | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 920 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2004 Posts: 920 | Hey 6cylinders, my email should have reached you and thank you very much! My truck is a C-10 longbed with 4 on the floor and 3.90 posi. The whole truck is all original besides a few rubber parts and other regular maintainence items. Well... at least until a couple of weeks ago when I added a set of fenton headers and a water heat system to the original intake. My next step is to get radial tires. I'm having my wheels rebuilt so that I can use the stock hubcaps. I'm not in a real hurry to add a new intake as I want to find one that screams eye candy. The offenhauser doesn't do it for me. I want something with curves. I'm very satified with current performance so if I improve on it - that is just a bonus. I read horror stories about multiple carb hook-ups and am just brave enough to tackle 2. Forget about triples. Thanks again.

Coolest looking 6-cyl. intake ever made. Has round finned runners at each end. Last one I sold on ebay brought $250. Saw one at the swap meet last weekend for $225.

I would also like to add CYCLONE to that list,I just bought one a couple of weeks ago.

I tried to buy one a few years ago, but was a day late and a dollar short! I think Cyclone was made by Cook's Machine Shop? Bob- I think the speed equipment vendor you are thinking of is Scott Sendtko. I think he's from Michigan? He has lots of cool intakes and valvecovers, but not cheap. The last email addy I have for him is: [email protected]. Otherwise I see him at all the usual swap meets, Hershey, Iola, Des Moines Goodguys, Cedar Rapids, etc.. In fact I just sold him an old Funderbird go-kart at the Back to the '50's swap in St. Paul last Sunday.

I bought a Nicson valve cover from him about 5 years ago. At the time I thought the price was high, but after I've seen what they've gotten on E-Bay for them lately, I ended up doing pretty well. Too cool to sell though, and it looks nice on my '50. Now I still need to find a Nicson side cover. Been looking for years, and the ones on E-Bay go for silly money.

If so, I did a story with pictures on this Nicson stuff for the May/June 2000 issue of the 12-Port News. Pages 21-22. This was when a friend of mine owned the parts and I was doing some work on them. After owning the parts for over 20 years, he lost interest and I bought all his Nicson stuff. Not easy to find the aluminum heads, I've heard of only a couple others besides mine. I'm sure there are more out there, just hard to find and expensive. Plus these heads only fit the 216 and early 235, not the later 235 due to the headbolt pattern change.
What I would really like to find is an original Sharp short sidecover.(if one was ever made?) If I can find one, I will try to buy it. If I can't buy it, I will copy it and make a reproduction. I would really like an original though, and I have a friend that would like one too. Right 6cylindersovertexas?

Do you have an extra copy of that 12 port news?

I hope everyone has gotten the pictures of the 2004 Pate Swap Meet tables. Something - huh? ViejitosCC, I do have a Harper intake. It is almost complete and I have never tried to use it. They are impractical, but I bought it so I would have one. This guy with the table of stuff has one that is complete. Barry, I don't remember if I told you I had a Harper. Barry - I have seen a picture of a tall Nicson side cover, but nothing on a later 235-261 short side cover. And Y-E-S!!! I would be a BUYER for almost any sidecover, especially Fenton and Sharp, although I must admit I have never seen a short Sharp, only a tall one. I have seen a picture of a Fenton. I do have a "CALFORNIA BILL" side cover for the 216-old 235 engine made by California Bill Fisher. I've had it for years and ran it on my old 216. Always got the looks and questions on it! Wrote a letter to Mr. Fisher once and asked him how many of them he made. Reply: Less than 100. It is the first piece of my museum collection!!!!!!!!

About 15-20 years ago, when I was getting into buying/selling/trading the 6-cylinder speed parts and no one else was, I bought many intakes as cheap as $5 ea., ($20 was about right here in the midwest) and the seller's usually thought I was nuts for buying them! If I had only known then what I know now!
Doctasuds- Portland in April is good, or at least it was about 10 years ago when I was out there. Came home with a truckload.
Joe- I have an original 1950 California Bill catalog of Chevrolet Speed Equipment. Shown in the catalog is your tall side cover. It sold for $18.50. What a rip-off! This might be the dumbest question I've ever asked you, but do you want copies of this? 16 page catalog, it also shows other worthless junk like Nicson, Cyclone and Edlebrock intakes, Barker Hi-Lift rocker arms, Scintilla mags, Potvin cams, insert rods etc... Hurst is the third stop going west from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. We are about 7 or 8 miles from the Airport on Airport Freeway. Population: 38,000. I have lived here since 1960 - eight years after Hurst became a city. What puts Hurst on the map? It is the home of Bell Helicopter. I love Albuquerque - I guess Belen is similar. Nice country and close to the mountains.

I came across it after he passed away and found it tucked in a drawer, still in the original mailing envelope with a lot of flyers for hopping up 6's, small blocks and the new 348. How do these prices sound to you, effective 4-1-58.
Chevy Super Dual intake with all linkages and fuel lines, $46.00, add a pair of new Stromberg carbs for $37.50
Set of 6 Power-Dome pistons,7 3/4 comp. ratio,$45.00
Milled,filled,and ported head, $48.00 exchange.
3/4 cam, $35.00 exchange
Rods converted to inserts with new bearings, $32.00 exchange.
Aluminum McGurk rocker cover with chrome breather,$24.00
New Corvette dual exhaust manifolds, $14.50
Granted $40-$50 a week were about the working man's take home pay in the 50's so I guess looking at it that way, this stuff was pretty steep for the average Joe back then.
Barry, are you setting up a booth at Iola?

I wish we could go back in time briefly, I would buy the Nicson and Sharp sidecovers I dream of. Notice how many of those parts are listed as exchange? Other than the new cast aluminum parts, most hi-perf. stuff seemed to be reworked stock parts. Now it seems to be the other way around, most hi-perf. parts are new, very little is reworked stock parts.
No, I quit swapping at Iola in the mid-'80's when our spaces got flooded out and they wanted us to get Wisc. tax numbers to boot. I just go there to buy now. Could meet you at the tower Wed. afternoon or Thursday though if you will be there then?
