I bought a double action fuel pump from Jim Carters. Can any one tell me which end is for fuel and which is for vacuum.
It appears the top is for fuel, but the bottom is bigger so I don't want to make an assumption. The are no markings for in and out. The bottom has three holes, one which is tapped, but doesn't look like it goes all the way through the case and two more, one on a boss and another just in the side of the case.
The two holes on the top are on bosses on the side of the case.
Thanks

Thank you. I wasn't getting great results from the search function until I put quotes around my search. Your links were just what I needed.
After pulling the pump out of the box again I did find the word "In" cast into the pump on two of the holes.
I will hook up the pump in series with the manifold vacuum as described in the various threads.

So it looks like the manifold fitting gets routed to a fuel pump vac port, and the wiper motor gets powered from the fuel pump. My issue is that I have two hoses coming from my wiper motor, and from the looks of Tim's picture, some just have one hose to hook up. I hooked one hose to the mani port, and the other to the fuel pump, and that didn't work. The wiper arms go one way, then won't return. Should I run the hose from the fuel pump to both hoses from the motor? I'd like to find out if the two hoses from the wiper motor should attach to the same line from the DA fuel pump, or one to the pump and one to the mani.
Oh, one more bit of info. The "out" port on the fuel pump was connected by a short hose to a hollow bolt with a hose fitting on it, holding the pump on the block. That's how it was when I got it.
This is the last piece before I can get the truck inspected and legal for some end-of-season enjoyment!

I've been messing around with different hose configurations, and still no dice. I've purchased a "rebuilt" motor from one of the mainstay suppliers, though it's appearance leaves something to be desired. I'm not super confident in it. The tube from the top valve moves pretty loosely, and the plastic slider on top wiggles much more than my original. I hooked it up to a vacuum pump, though, and it did move steadily and swiftly. There is a constant vacuum hiss from the motor when the engine is running and the hoses are hooked up.
I did discover that if I hook vacuum to both of the fittings coming from the top of the motor, there is no movement. If I hook just one, there is some, even if I plug one hole. The wiper arms move smoothly and freely by hand, and I've lubed the joints in the linkage, and I'm wetting the windshield. The wipers only move half a sweep then stop. I have to park them by hand. I'm getting 23" vac from the manifold, and that is hooked to the motor. Is that enough? I've been messing with tuning the engine, as well.
I can't figure our what to do with the fuel/vac pump hoses, still. I know which one sucks and which blows, but I don't know what goes where. I've tried running the manifold hose to the fuel pump, then the fuel pump vac to a "t" fitting to split to both motor fittings; I've tried running the manifold right to the motor, and swapped between the fittings on the fuel pump. The "blow" fitting gave some movement, and the vac fitting none.
Somebody must have a clue they can share! Anybody? Please...? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 637 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 637 | The top part is fuel, the bottom is vacuum. The plumbing for the vacuum side goes like this, from the manifold to the "in" side, from the "out" side to the windshield wiper motor. If your wiper motor doesn't work with that plumbing you have a problem with the wiper motor. Take the top off and soak the leather "piston" in oil until it softens, then it should work.
