John M, I hope you don't mine my linking the guys back to the firewall picture of your truck. It is an excellent example of the W-1 with an oil bath air cleaner applied to it.
http://s160.photobucket.com/albums/t172/stovebltr/Misc/?action=view¤t=49_firewall.jpg Having fought a nearly two year battle with the original flat top Rochester 'B' carb I thought I would try a W-1 for a while and see if it is all it is cracked up to be.
I've found that it is not. I still have a hesitation or flat response while accelerating up to speed and it accelerates best when the choke is out roughly 1/2”. Even when running along steady at 50 or 55mph or around 2500-2700rpm if you add a smidgen of choke you can back off the throttle a tiny bit and the engine seems to come to life. I’m absolutely convinced that the W-1 is jetted to lean for the post ’49 engine with it better breathing head and running it on alcohol blends. And even though I have dropped the float level nearly 1/8” below the recommended level, I still have a fuel-flooded engine that takes a minute or so to clear out when I restart after it has sat for more than 15 or 20minutes.
But that’s not what generated this post. After fitting up the W-1 a few months ago I tried to use my oil bath (which is the same one John M has on his W-1) air cleaner and found that it the bottom of the unit hits the W-1 dust cover preventing it from dropping down fully onto the air horn. There is no indent or dimple in the bottom to clear the dust cover so I just put the original spark arrester back on. Here’s a picture of the oil bath on the ‘B’:
