Lots of things could be wrong. Start by checking the firing order. 153624. Then move to the points, spark plugs. It is possible to have a cracked distributor cap, but that usually won't keep one from starting.

I wonder if it might have gotten a load of gas in the exhaust manifold from a stuck float,and when it started,it ignited in the exhaust pipe and blew up the muffler. with a stuck float it might have drowned the plugs. | | |

I've had this happen 4 or 5 times.(I'm just lucky I guess) One time I blew up a muffler on my '62 Impala. Man, sounded like a shotgun went off underneath me! It was the coil. Coil dies. Fuel loads up & then combusts. Put on new coil & starts up no problem. Good luck.

Replace the spark plugs, fix the float, check the timing.
You might also have broken a pushrod. Pull the valve cover and see if all the valves move when you crank it.
