factory would have been on the passenger side of the cowl under the hood. if you have clutchhead screws holding nothing or empty holes in a rectangular pattern the plate has proably been (re)moved. When you open passenger side of hood the plates should be between windlace and front of firewall on the side of the cowl. did you run the serial number you have thru the vin cruncher to see if it is accurate to that model year? Also some states used the engine number for titling purposes. look on passenger side of engine below distributor and towards the rear of engine

DEA136864 refers to the orig engine stamped number.
Consider yourself lucky, if you still have the orig engine. As kb3csw said, look at the flat flange aft of the distributor. You may need to use a wire brush to clean it up in order to see the stamped numbers. The prefix "DEA" is specific to the "1946" 2nd Design 235 motor. Your block cast number should be 839751. Please also reference Brads41-46chevys.com. Sounds as if your data plate is gone.
