On my '62 one ton,I'd love to run the 16 inch dual wheels I got,but they won't fit over these huge brake drums. Is there any other drums and backing plates that will fit this rear end that would be a smaller diameter? Assuming I get this challenge conquered,what carriers will replace the original;I think I was told one from a 71 3/4 ton would work and was available with a better ratio selection. This will have to be a low-bux kind of solution,so any money saving hints for this will surely be appreciated.

The best solution is to get a rear end from a later model truck. Assuming the rear cover has 10 bolts holding it on, the gear in your truck are about 5.14 or 4.57, I'm not sure on the specific ratios for the 62. Your only upgrade using your differential is the pumpkin swap from a 64-72 3/4 ton, 4.10 gears which are getting a little bit scarce. I would start by visiting a local salvage yard, if you have one that has some older trucks. See if they have anything to offer.

Thanks,Fred;
That's what I think I'll have to do. The only yard around here,which I refer to as "the alleged wrecking yard",has ssome older trucks.I saw 3 of the L-60's E-70's Chevt 3/4 tons,but he wants 150.00 for just the pumpkin from one. He says thats cuz the rear end's no good to him without the guts. Is that a fair price? I don't usually have to resort to wrecking yards-I usually know someone who has what I need and will trade,so I don't know what a fair price would be. As I said before,if I can't change the brakes to something smaller diameter,I'd rather just swap to a different rear end. Any idea what will work? I can arrange spring pads and such,but I've already had to pass on a free Ford Dana 60 because the axle hubs were about 1/8th inch too big to fit through my wheels. (guess I'll have to carry a wheel around to test fit on every axle I look at.)

You'll be looking for a GM 14-Bolt one ton Dually rear end from 1973-88 GM truck. These have the inboard durms and can be changed to disk brakes as well with a kit offered from many different sites. This is what I'm looking at having to do to my 1965 GMC 2500 one ton .

Thanks for the info, Jolly. Prices on the 14 bolts run from $150 to $350 locally, depends on the yard and how hungry to owner is. For the 10 bolt pumpkin, I got one for $100 from a friend, got the housing with it.

I got my 4.10 pumpkin from a pick-n-pull in St. Louis for about $60. Of course, since they don't allow jacks in the yard, I almost smashed my arm getting it out...

Yes, that yard is alleged all right. There's a better yard in Battle Mountain and they're not so grumpy.......or you could call Ray Salisbury in Austin, he's pretty knowledgeable about those things and has a few older trucks in his junkyard.
