And if I need another one, does it have to be this exact part number? Thanks for any assistance. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | They can be welded but that is such a common one that it would be better to find a used one. Any v-8 55 to 72 or 6 from 63-72 with the large flywheel will fit. Except 68 up with 4 speed has a larger center hole. A few back in the early 60's had the clutch opening on the right hand side. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Looked ok when i put them both together. NOT! Paid $45 for an adornment. (no cash on return, trade or credit only.) Might have found one in CA. He is double checking the casting numbers for me. This time I want a guaranteed fit. Guess I'll just have to try and enjoy the day. (Would rather be enjoying my truck!).

Prefer not to do this all over again. I am a real Rookie, and and while I am thoroughly enjoying myself, I HATE to do something twice when i could have done it right the first time. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 346 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 346 | Your bellhousing looks like it's missing a good sized piece where the crack originates.
I sent you a PM.

Think i might have found an all new after market part on Jeg's. Now I just need to know what transmission I have. Could any of you give me an idea? | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | Most likely, it will be an SM420, if it still has the original trans.

Sorry, really am new to all this. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | None of the above. It would just be an SM420 GM truck 4 speed, manufactured at the Toledo Transmission plant. Used from '47-'66. Should have the small bearing retainer on the front similar to the SM318/319 3 speeds.

Thanks. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | OK, now the waters are getting muddied a bit. That's not the original trans. Looks to be an SM465 (you can tell from the PTO port on the divers side), which replaced the SM420 in '67. In some ways, it's a better trans in that it is full syncro, rather than syncro in 2-3-4 like the 420. However, it doesn't have as deep of a first gear ratio. It will have the later large diameter bearing retainer, which will make a difference on the bellhousing. You will need a bellhousing with the large index bore. Most likely, it came out of a 2wd truck, as the 465 was never used with a divorced style T-case.

Has what I need, crack free and ready to go. Not only that, but he is close enough for me to drive out and pick up. I get the part I need, and the chance to meet a fellow Bolter! Outstanding! | | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 346 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 346 | Waved a smiling Don's 65K10 off towards Oregon with the correct bellhousing about an hour ago. He should have that engine in by 4:30 or 5:00 this afternoon Always fun to meet another Stovebolter and compare projects.

Many thanks to Olblue, you have a lovely home, beautiful shop, and more projects than I could ever handle! The little blurb on his signature, "No Room Left in Shop", believe it! Was great to meet another Bolter, and especially nice when it is one as helpful as yourself. Thanks again Olblue. Now off to work! The SM465 is not syncro in first gear either. It is a more rugged trans. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though.
