I am wanting to relocate my gas tank to under the bed and see a stainless version and a zinc coated steel version. the SS is really pricey ($650) but the zinc is half that price. I am not sure how that zince would hold up though. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

My first impression is Zinc may have a deleterious effect is some way. Not that I can say how I know this because I don't know this.

I think you should jump for the stainless. The reason for this is that it's more impervious to corrosion from ever-increasing percentages of ethanol being added to gas now.

Polyethylene Gas Tank Conversion Kit (21 Gallon) is $246.00:

http://www.ineedparts.com/index.php?target=products&product_id=3878

Steel Gas Tank Kit (20 gallon) is $200.00 from LMC:

http://www.lmctruck.com/ICATALOG/CBE/full.aspx?Page=71

Aluminum Tank Kit (20 gallon) is $250.00 from Summit:

None of the above will fit a short wheelbase without changing out frame crossmembers.

Summit has a 16 gallon fuel cell that will fit a short wheelbase for $155.00.

Just used a aluminum tank the right price from Summit or Speedway
A heck of a lot cheaper than SS I realy can't see a reason for stainless unles you are mounting it in the bed and it would show.

I agree with gazim, the aluminum is easier to work with (drilling etc.) than SS and with what we do with these trucks you never know what you'll run into trying to install.

Depends on what you want to run for fuel. If it's just gas, the choice is really yours. However, if you think in the future you might convert over to E85, then you'd want either stainless steel or plastic. Plastic is probably by far the cheapest, and it's very tough too.

my under bed tank is steel from tanks inc.
it's your choice, your truck and pocket book. I wanted a spare tire space under my truck also ........ many don't as they place their tank in the back. me, i think that's wasted space if you're running an L~6 motor. and I wanted the spare tire easy to get to and got rid of the long bar tire holder for a new cable operated system.

Jim:
Your picture album is the greatest. You and I think alike in what is needed on the old bolts. You could publish all those pics with descriptions (rarely done by any of us) in a book that would sell like hotcakes.

You know Jim,

That’s one heck of a compliment coming from a fellow bolter doing what you have done and show us ALL in your shoebox. your sons and you are a great team. WOW dance is what I can say. I'm re-doing my wife's truck on a shoestring of funds and YOUR project and picture book are even more complete than mine or most of what I've seen over the years. I've been watching yours and others, and of what I can (there's a lot) see there are lots of fabulous guys here that have a multitude of great ideas. When I got started in this project I had to relearn what I had forgotten in the last 30+ years since H/S auto shop. I'm a motorcycle type guy, w/ 5 total now down from 7,

& 2 more to do, a 49 hrd and 74 bmw, so it was back to reading, learning (A/S-101) and applying. This site (thanks peg and john) allows us types to do this, have fun and teach others, which is why you and I enjoy our time in the shop. I've had a couple guys say they wish they had done their trucks now (these days) w/ a (hotter) straight L-6 rather than a V8. I state my thoughts and show what limited work I can do sticking w/ an L-6. ALL of this has/is a fun project.

thank you for your kind words

Ps, Caroline still doesn't know about the heated seats yet.
