Hey guys,
Looking for some info. I bought a hood ornament for my '49 3100. Once it arrived I set it a side for a couple of days till I had time to work on it. Well, the one I bought doesn't fit the holes in my hood. Matter of fact, if I place the ornament on the hood where it follows the curve of the hood, the old holes would be exposed. Anyone ever run into this? Now maybe the hood is flexible enough that once installed the hood and ornament will mate to each other. My concern, is that the middle mounting screws are at least a half inch off from the holes in my hood. Where there more then one maker of Hood Ornaments??? Any and all information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Brian Moore

Sounds to me like you need to start buying NOS parts.

Yes there were many different styles/brands/years of hood ornaments that found their way onto a truck hood.

This is the 1947-53 Chevrolet truck accessory hood ornament.

Maybe someone has an original template and can measure the distance between the holes?

Brian,
I know you posted this a while back. Sorry I didn't get back earlier. There were two ornaments available. One for the 1/2 thru 1 tons and another for the larger trucks. Same style but different part numbers. They might have different positions for the mounting lugs. I have one I took off a grain truck but don't have the one for the smaller trucks available to compare. The small truck's part # is 986161 and the larger is 986162. Check the backside of your ornament.

I did post a while back but in no big hurry. I don't have any pic's but I will work on some. The number on the part that I bought, which is NOT a reproduction, is 3688833. I didn't spend a ton of money on this part as there is some slight damage to it. I figured I would get one and then work on finding a better on to replace it.

br I would think that the small vs Large truck ornaments would be obvisouly different by size. This looks to me like a year variation or different plant/different supplier. Close but no cigar.

There has to be someone else that has run into this???

It looks like there were three sizes of ornaments for 47-53 and for 54-55. Most likely this is due to the three hood styles: (1) all small/medium/large trucks, (2) DD Double Duty - ?? Forward Control, delivery box van??, and (3) COE.

Your part number does not match any of the the part numbers in the Master Parts Book.

At this point, a photo or two and hole measurements might help to identify what you have. Maybe the ornament that was installed on your hood was not an original ornament.

I will try to get photos and measurements this weekend. I will include measurements of both the ornament that I have and the holes that are in my hood. Thanks everyone for replies.

Well ho photos but here is what I have come up with so far. The ornament that I have has the following measurements: Front mounts to Center mounts measures 7 3/8" center to center. The center mounts to the rear mount measures 8 1/8" center to center. This is exactly what the Repo's out there are measuring. Now here is what my hood measures. Front to middle measures 7" center to center. Center to rear measures 8" center to center.

Close but no cigar..

can you tell if someone ever bonded one of the holes up and perhaps drilled another hole so some oddball ornament would work? I've seen folks do that....even on late model's.

Achipmunk it doesn't look like that was done. I know what you are talking about but there are 5 holes for the deluxe hood ornament and other then the middle holes be off front to back. The configuration of the holes is correct.

Brian,

From whom did you purchase your hood ornament? What is that company's part number? Does it look like the ornament at the link that I posted above?
