old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 4 | Besides serial/vin what are the give aways in telling a 1940 2 ton. I have heard speak of them- but have not found any real hard documents on a two ton. Did they make them? This one I am looking to buy is a 10 lug dually, the man claims it came as a flat bed. It's all there and runs but does need brakes. It has a SBC in it. I do know it is not a two speed rear end, but it is a huge rear axle for sure, way bigger than my 03 Dodge Dually. So any info is much appreciated before I buy it. I will need brake parts and have only seen parts for the 1.5 ton.?
Thanks in advance, Denis Norcal

Brake shoes and wheel cylinders are serviceable. Drums can be difficult to find. If the third member has a cable shifter or vacuum chamber, it would be a 2 speed. Otherwise it would be a single speed. They were usually sold as a cab and chassis and a dealer would have installed a flat bed. It doesn't really make much difference if it is 1.5 or 2 ton as far as parts. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 4 | Is it a Chev or GMC. No cable it is a standard rear end. Ah so 1.5 and 2 ton would carry the same brake parts. Thanks Much. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 4 | Still wondering about the 10 lug wheels? Anyone know anything about that? What is normal for a 1 ton, 1.5 or 2 ton? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 207 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 207 | 10 lugs would be for a 1.5 and a 2 ton. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 | There were no U.S. Built Chevrolet trucks rated higher than 1 1/2 ton, before 1946. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 73 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 73 | If you click on my pic there's a few good pics of a 38 1 1/2 ton chassis. 20" 10 lug wheels for sure and the rearends at least double the size of my modern 1 1/2 ton truck. There is a little thumb button on my shifter but it goes into the tranny, you have to push it down to get the truck in reverse.I was able to get all new brake parts without much trouble, the e-brake cables were the hardest to find. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,144 | found the ebrake cables for my 38 1 1/2 ton at antique auto supply out of texas | | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 4 | NICE!!
