When i shift to any gear i think i have to put the clutch in and let the rpms drop alot in order to not have the grinding noise, even then it still does it a bit. What does this mean. Syncros bad? | | |

#45275 04/13/2005 3:22 AM | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 49 Member | | Member Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 49 | Assuming you're pre '47 and the cluth adjustment is fine, you have to double clutch the non syncro trans. Run the engine to a moderate RPM, shift to neutral, let the clutch out while the RPM slows down, depress the clutch and ease into the next gear. Coming down takes a little more practice. While in neutral during the double clutch, slightly rev the engine, depress the clutch and drop into the lower gear while the engine is winding down. The trick is matching the engine RPM to the trans. Keep practicing and put a qt of Lucas in that trans. | | |

I do know for a fact that i need a new clutch. The grinding has gotten worse recently. Do you have to adjust the clutch once in a while? I never have but i dont drive the truck much. | | |

#45278 04/13/2005 6:22 AM | Joined: Aug 2003 Posts: 31 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Aug 2003 Posts: 31 | If the clutch adjustment doesn't clear it up the problem could be with a contaminated clutch with oil or grease on the disk. This makes the clutch disk swell and not fully release. Clutches don't last forever, you may have to bite the bullet and replace the clutch assembly. Before you do anything drastic, check the trans fluid level. If the fluid is too low the synchros don't work as well and you get gear clash. Hope it's an easy fix for you.
