After several carb rebuilds, replacements, tune-ups, part replacements, and adjustments, the rebuilt 1954 chevy 235 in my 46 Chevy one ton truck still ran rich. After reading numerous posts and articles, I replaced the carb and original ignition as follows.

Carb is a 1977 factory rebuilt Rochester carb for a 250 inline chevy 6 (ebay-$46). Flange and linkage worked with minimal adjustments. Auto choke removed to permit use of manual choke. No more rich running.

Distributor is an aftermarket HEI unit with integral coil manufactured for this series engine (ebay $125). The unit bolted right up with no alterations needed. Wires were replaced.

Engine fires up instantly, runs much smoother, quieter, with improved fuel economy.

One of the simplest alterations I have performed.Don't know why I waited so long.

Did you try a fuel pressure regulator before the carb swap? As I understand it, late model fuel pumps are carried as replacements for the earlier ones and have a significantly higher fuel pressure. Late model carbs can handle it. Early years can't. It's just the kind of information that wouldn't be available, and I wondering because my original 1954 carb runs rich since I installed a new fuel pump.

My 53 runs very rich. As far as I can tell has the original carb and fuel pump.

I rebuilt the carb but the inside of the exhaust pipe is still a black, damp mess.

I would like to try a new carb but I was not sure what to put on.

Do you think the new distributor did anything for the richness or just the smooth running?

I'll send you the pressure regulator I bought if you will try it out. I'm really curious about results and am out of Rochester B's. PM me your address if you are interested. Just put it in the line between fuel pump and carb. It's adjustable from 3 to 7 psig, I think.

What should the fuel pressure be?

As I understand it, it should be 3.3 psig for an original 195? Rochester B. Any higher would force the needle valve off the seat causing leaks and rich mixture.

I've had trouble getting information on this subject.
