For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 615 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 615 | I have my SM420 being rebuilt-bearings, seals and replacing the top plate and shifter. The repair guy orginally wanted to replace all the gears because of water damage but I looked at them and it seemed purely cosmetic..so I put a hault to that. The gears had no damaged teeth etc.I called him to pick up the tranny and now he says he can't get some of the seals for the PTO-not that I was having any problems with it.He said he could re-machine something so a more common seal could be used. I told him just to put it back on and I'd pick it up..the bill has grown another $200 from what he originally said and I think I'm being milked.
Back to my question: Any sources for PTO parts-if needed-can new or rebuilt ones still be purchased?
Why do I have a PTO? My 55 2nd series came with a dump bed-regular step side..but it dumps...handy for dump runs.
Thanks,
Keith

You don't have to have a PTO unless you are going to use it. Block off plates can be found or made easily and 'problem solved'.
All seals are identified by ID, OD, width and lip style. There are bazillions of seals made and almost all are available somewhere. If you don't have a need for the PTO, block it off and deal with it later.
You probably aren't' being milked, the guy is doing it the only way he knows how, with the correct new parts. It's his reputation that is at stake.

I'll give some thought to what you said about his reputation..
Thanks Stuart,

I have a 1941 chevy 1 ton dually that I just purchased. It has a 4 speed tranny. I would like to find a pto/hoist and bed for it. How can I tell if a pto/hoist/bed will fit? I saw an add for a 1950, pto & hoist. Will that fit?
Thanks for the help!

Simplicity leads to reliability.

I'll look those parts up. Small world I work for a metal stamping company that stamps seal inserts for both those companies.
Apreciate the help..

If you have an old Muncie PTO it will be a Chelsea A series if it's cast iron anyway. Muncie at that time was a catalog company who resold the products of many other true manufacturers and were very good at it. They are now a manufacturer of their own products. You should have no problem at all with the seals from them or locally for that matter. Fleetpride is the CT distributor and they have 4 locations. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 615 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 615 | Thanks for clearing that up MoneyPit..I had some work done on the tranny recently and had the mechanic look at it. He found 2 of the seals but couldn't locate one of them..He got creative and used an O ring to repair the existing one..So far no leaks..
I'll need to turn my attention to what the PTO drives-the pump for the dump stepside..not sure I'll find any name on it.
Thanks again,
