on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 211 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 211 | I believe i have 2 problems with my monojet carb (I'll post a pic at somepoint) and i don't know how to fix them. Since i've started driving it in June, about 3/5's of the time i shut it off, it sputters and runs on for a bit. When my grandpa (the original owner of my truck) came down to visit the other day, he asked me to pop the hood and start it up. I never said anything about the sputtering but he thought something was up with the carb. He said i was idling a little high but that its easy to fix. Trouble is he failed to tell me how to fix it??!! Could this also be a cause for my sputtering? The second "problem" is that recently everywhere i go it smells like freakin half burnt gasoline!!! A few months ago i cut the tailpipe off right to the end of the cab and threw on a glasspack, which ends about 1/3 of the way down the bed. Its just recently began smelling like this and one of my engine savvy buddies said i might be running a little rich.He also said that working on carburettors suck and that even restorers and piddlers DREAD messing with them. The only thing i know about a carburettor is what it does. HELP ME!!! | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 239 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 239 | Start with the basics...
What engine do you have?
What is the current idle speed?
What is the timing set at?
What is the baseline condition of the tune of your engine?
There is nothing wrong with carbs. They work just fine when used as intended.
I work on carbs on a regular basis for both performance and economy, with pretty good success. PM me if you want to.

A few weeks ago the timing gear finally completely stripped while i was driving, i had it towed and a new gear was put on, so i believe its timing is good now. i dont know my idle, i dont have a tach, i dont know what timing is set at and i dont know what the baseline condition of the tune of my engine is. Sorry im not really up to par with that stuff | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 | My suggestion would be to find a mechanic in your area that works on old cars. You can usually get a good recommendation from other classic car owners... I found my guy from a recommendation at my local NAPA store.
I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but from the way you describe the problem it doesn't appear that you have enough basic knowledge to tackle the myriad of problems you mention here, even if someone would be generous enough to tell you what all to do.
Go find a good mechanic and get yourself on the road to a better understanding of your truck... guys who work on old cars are usually pretty decent and he might even let you watch or help. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 211 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 211 | No offense taken, your actually right i'm not very knowlegible in that field and dont want to screw anything up. I have a cousin that restores old fords, maybe he'll know what to do. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | The guys are right. If you need a carb o-haul you need an experienced mechanic. Those are good carbs. but need to be freshened up occasionally. There are some things you can check & do your self. Adjust the idle speed as low as you can & still be comfortable. There are two links between the lower section of the carb (throttle body) & the center section (fuel bowl). Make sure they are working when you open & close the throttle. Sometimes the link comes out of the metering rod & lets it stay on full rich. If it is out put it in with needle nose pliers & bend it towards the rod. Move the throttle open & shut a few times to make sure it doesn't come out again. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | |
