Any advice on how to sneak a camshaft past rusted into their bores lifters? This is my first engine tear down and the pistons(aluminum) and steel lifters are stuck! I can rotate/force the cam with a wrench on the flats.

I have ATF soaking the pistons and lifters from the oil pan side but I would like to get the cam out of the way.

Thanks Pete

Upside down, beat them out w/long skinny screwdriver or punch. Brian

I've had better success with PBBlaster or Kroil than ATF.

Can you get a pair of vise-grips on the lifters? You can get them to turn to break them free. Also, if you have a big enough torch heat the block, but not the lifter. The expansion might help.

Soak them with Kroil for a few days, then drive them out from the bottom with a long punch. If you manage to move the lifters up about 1/8" or so, the cam should slide out under them, then you'll have more room to manipulate the lifters. If it's that tight, both the cam and lifters will be junk. Be careful and don't crack the block while you're removing the lifters!
