What would I have to do to put a 3spd in and take the 4spd out? Its a 1948 1/2 ton. Or maybe put in an auto? Eng. is still 216.
Thanks Virg

I made the swap from 4 speed to 3 speed in a AD years ago. It is simle if you have a doner truck as you will need all the linkage including the steering gear mast jacket, to do it right.

Life is like a roll of toilet paper, the nearer the end the faster it goes.

I was thinking to go with just a floor shift. Would the tranny just bolt up to the eng.?

The trans will bolt up but I wonder why you want to change. The 4 speed is a better trans. & 2nd gear is syncronized which you will use for a first anyway. They are not hard to o-haul if it has a problem & the final drive on the highway is the same.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

You will need a new floor cover without a shifter doghouse in it. You will also need to change the U-Joint on the drive shaft if you are keeping the original rear end. It will bolt right up on the engine side. I believe there is a pin on the bellhousing on some of the 3 speed trucks that is missing on 4 speed trucks.

My thoughts exactly... all that work for what?

The SM420 is a rock crusher, a fully sychro 3-speed with an extra low gear for the three times in the next 10 years that you may actually need it... but it's there if you do.

What's the point?
