can you put a 6 volt electric starter on a the 216 chevy motor, is there one that can be obtained that will interchange with from an car or truck that came electric?, can the manual starter be upgraded, what would be the best way togo. if i got to go to 12 volts what starter or from what vechicle will fit.thanks

All starters are electric, unless you're using a hand crank or an air turbine. Well, a Stearman biplane uses an inertial starter, but that's a glorified hand crank! Does anybody understand his question?

My guess is that he doesn't want a foot starter, but a car type key or push button.

I think your question was fairly obvious to most folks. I have copied a previous post with some info about which solenoid starter will work with your engine.


Your choices of solenoid starters are:

1949-54 passenger if you have a 6 volt flywheel
1955-63 passenger with 6 cylinder, 12 volt flywheel
1960-62 truck with 6 cylinder, 12 volt flywheel.

thanks,the others you mentioned with 12 volt flywheel, is that on the one that is coming off of, or i need to change the flywheel. the 49- 54 sounds like what i need. did it come with 6 volt or 12 volt (49-54) thanks

If your rig is indeed a '53 flatbed, then a solenoid starter from a '49-'54 passenger car should fit right in. These are both six volt starters and the flywheels are compatible.

The starter off a newer 12 volt truck has a different starter drive configuration to match a different tooth count flywheel. They won't work on your truck.

You will have to change your ignition switch from a ON/OFF to a ON/START/RUN, or just add a little push button.

This is the way I understand it.

have i got to do anyting to the foot pedal starter mechanism?

also, if i go to the 6 volt electric starter, will it be sluggish as the foot pedal type, or just as well leave it a lone

I think the only difference you will see between any starter that will fit your rig will be the type of actuation. One requires you to engage it with your foot while the other only requires you to turn a key or push a button. Neither will turn any better or faster than the other.

With a good battery and clean properly sized cables and tight connections, your truck should start fine...they did this for many moons before the advent of the 12 volt system.

If you stick the car starter on and make sure all is tip top with the starting system, one flick of the key should get you going. This would be true for the foot starter too, but you have to mash it!

well mr. man yesterday cleaned the terminals, and connected to the newly purhcased battery and man it turns over like a 12 volt. thanks for everyones help. ole 53 is coming along.
