I am finally getting my truck roadworthy again after a head-on collision last June. The '54 235" will start (with difficulty), and run, but I can't seem to get it to idle or time it! Points are good, plugs just cleaned and gapped, new vac advance, new fuel pump. I suspect either stale gas/ varnish in carb or my valve tappet clearances are way off (there does seem to be some noise in the valvetrain). This engine was running great last year before the wreck. Any thoughts/ comments are greatly appreciated.
By the way, any comments on the Pertronix ignition module for stovebolt 6's?
Thanks!

The truck had sat for about 2 years. first I was ready for the stale gas, got underneith to drain the tank and found a totally rotton rubber fuel line, gas had leaked out, bone dry. Then on to start her up, no spark. Finally traced power with a clip on circuit tester, had power all the way to the coil, then nothing. Problem was an open circuit at the spade connector to the coil. You just need to eliminate each, area ie. fuel, electric, and tune up etc. I've run a Pertronix unit for a few years in my 47 Coupe, it's great, no points to wear out.

I suspected something in the ignition. I gave it a tune up, minus plug wires. No better. I took it to a shop and they gave it another tune up, with wires, and it was fine. I guess the wires got weathered sitting in the woods.

Pull the valve cover and squirt a liberal dose of Kroil or some other penetrating oil on the valve stems, and work the valves up and down with a pry bar. They should move freely, with no tendency to stick. If a vacuum gauge fluctuates a lot at idle, you've got an intake valve leaking a little. Jerry
