sits in the door jam. Took it out about 6 months ago, but can't remember.

There are 2 in each door, one lower and one upper. They fit into the door jamb, held in place by a bracket. To remove it you first must remove the windlace retainer.

That don't look like a door stop bumper for a '46. The '46 door stop bumper don't have any metal on it, it's all rubber. It pops in a square hole on the jamb (the side with the striker plate). Should be two of them. It souldn't be held inplace with a bracket.

John, thanks for the photo, but i did get those bumpers in the right place and thanks to Ernie for the heads up on me having a message. Still waiting for a picture of where the bumper with the metal cap pushed on it goes. Thanks, Cecil..........

Looks like the part that goes into that recess is for the hardware that kinda glides the door into position for the striker. On the door there a "do hickey" bracket that gets recieved into that opening in question. The bracket is spot welded in and the small upper and lower parts inside it is clipped in some how. Mine is here:
