You will need to make sure that the knurl diameter and shank length are correct. Is this with a stock suspension/axles or have you swapped them. that will make a difference as the knurl and shank specs are different. If it's stock, the knurl is .561", the shank is 5/16". You might be able to get away with a longer shank dpending on what wheels you run, and the knurl can be a few thousanths bigger, but you'll want that to be close to OE spec. I did a bit of looking in a Napa book I have, I couldn't come up with anything in 7/16" any longer than about 1 7/8" overall, had to get into 1/2" to get anything longer. I did see a 1/2" stud that was 2 5/16 long with the .561 knurl, but the knurl length is almost 1".

A related question. I had to drill out the retaining pin in the diff. that holds the one spider gear shaft so that I could pull the axle. any ideas how to replace it ? I sorta planned on tapping the hole to the next bigger size then fabricating a new post/pin. Anyway I could use epoxy to hold the safety pin in instead of tapping the new hole? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 203 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 203 | I broke that bolt of on my old 86 half ton. I was getting rid of it anyway, so I scribed a note on the diff. cover that said it broke off and something like "sorry" or "good luck". This is a highly impractical solution for what might be a fairly easy part to find in your case, but I had a bolt electrically disintegrated out of a dirtbike chassis one time. The guy was a specialist around here, but there might be someone around you. Ask machine shops for a reference. It's impractical because it cost me 200 bucks, but a new bike frame was around 500.

Get a stock replacement and a Heli-Coil kit in the correct thread size. Heli-Coils are actually stronger than the original threads, so it should work as long as you didn't have to drill it out too much to get the pin out.
