I am wiring my '50 3100 with an EZ Wiring kit and have a question for anyone who has used this kit. The rear section of the kit has three wires: an individual wire to each turn signal and one wire that feeds the left tail light, license plate light and right tail light. I'm assuming this single wire connects to the brake switch. What makes the brake lights work separately from the tail lights?

the tail lights are wired to the light switch [the one that "feeds the left tail light, license plate light and right tail light" .... the brake lights connect to the brake light switch, then go to the signal switch, then to the "individual wire to each turn signal" [actually the brake light element] - when you signal, it's the brake light element that's flashing, if you have the brakes on, the flasher interrupts the power to that light

Thanks Bill. That's the answer I was expecting. So, the "complete wiring harnes" seems to have eliminated the brake light wiring from the brake switch to the tail lights.

I must have misread the instruction book. :-)

I just got off the phone with the guy at EZ Wiring and he just muddied up the waters. According to him, I should just use the 3rd brake light wire to wire up the brake lights for now. Save the two turn signal wires for when I install a new column and actually have turn signals.

Rereading your earlier post, it sounds like you used those turn signal wires to connect to the brake switch on the firewall. Is that correct? How does it connect to the flasher relay and steering column when I want to install turn signals later?

ahhh, you don't have a signal setup! well, the tech is right, you need to use the xtra wire that's brake only to hook up your brake lights for now - when you have a signal system in, the wire from the brake light switch will go to the column unit, then on to the brake lights from there - as I said, when you signal, the flasher uses the brake filament, interrupting it if the brakes are on at the same time

at the rear, there will be one wire for tail/license lights, hook'er up - then there's one for right brake[turn], one for left brake[turn], those 2 will be inop until you get the signal setup happening, so for now the extra wire for 3rd brake light does both brake lights [or all 3], later only a 3rd light if you have one
