Ok. Now for my next task at hand. And Im having issues finding any sort of manual that has a step by step guide of cleaning and disassembling, and reassembling the engine. I called Chevy, and they say they are unable to supply me with a book or manual for the 1954-55 suburbans. I keep getting the same girl, who sounds like she has no idea whats going on.
Ive tried ebay, amazon, and a few other places...but being the first time Im not sure about where to find a manual with LOTS of PICS for this....HELP

1954 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN Took me 20 years, but I got it!
Had to take a couple steps back, but I am back to work on it.
First to get her up and running. Then Ill worry bout the body,
But man I am sure getting tired of hearing "How much you wanna sell that for, name your price, everything is for sale"
Nope, not this one.

You can buy both a assembly manual that covers the entire truck, and a maintance manual that covers the motor and running gear. You won't find these at most book stores, but instead need to check the venders listed here on the Stovebolt.

You may not find a manual specific to a 235 and Hydra-Matic with lots of pics. Much of what you need to do is common to almost any rebuild project and books covering any motor will help with that.

As for the Hydra-Matic if you are not an experienced mechanic you may not want to tackle that project yourself. Its hard to find a transmission shop that will work on that ancient transmission and parts for it can be hard to find. I'd suggest you ask who others have had work on them, and hire the work out.

The books on that transmission are out there. I've seen them for sale from time to time, and I personally own a set. It just took some time to find them.

While your truck is a Suburban, yours are running gear questions, and those aspects of your Suburban are identical to the same year 1/2-ton pickups. You might find more response if you ask these questions in the shop area of the forum. Some of the best people on Hydra-Matic questions may never look in the Suburban and panel area.

It's true. I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble...

WATTS,

Have you checked with the production parts vendors in the Links section of this forum? The 1954 Chevrolet Truck Shop Manual is readily available from all vendors and on eBay. This has information on the engines available in 1954.

The 1954 Chevrolet Truck Shop Manual is also available on-line (thanks to Keith Hardy)

You can again thank Keith Hardy and Greg Hill for making 1954 Chevrolet Hydra-Matic Maintenance & Adjustment Booklets available on-line.

There was no special book or manual for suburbans (that is why the person had no idea how to help you). This might sound odd and it sure makes it difficult to restore these vehicles. There is a reprint of a Factory Assembly Manual but it has little Suburban-specific information.

I was going to say that Tim Lederman will be the "calvary" on this one. He is a 54 Suburban owner as well as a hydra-matic owner. Besides that, if anything ever written on the subject made it to print, he has it. You are in good hands!
