I am planning to upgrade the drivetrain in my 42, 11/2ton 4x4 chevy. I'd like to use a 292 w/4L80 auto trans or Spicer 3035A 5sp od trans. Any suggestions?
Also, the Motors truck & diesel manual lists the 1970/71 292 engine at 170hp @4000 rpm, all later year models are rated between 120/130hp @3600 rpm. What's the difference, other than rpm, between these models.

Most likely its the way they rate them. One is flywheel horsepower and the other is rear wheel horsepower. They changed the ratings system in 72 or 73. Check the cam specs. If they are the same, then the motors are the same. You can't have 50 more horsepower using the same cam! Joe

For a lot of good info on the 292 get the book "Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual" by Leo Santucci. It's $14 at amazon, and a must have for late model Chevy sixes.

Yep, got my book, and it IS neat! Lots of info and Pictures on ID'ing blocks and differences between them and much more. I did not know there were a standard and then Heavy duty engines in these sizes. Still readin'....

4L80E trans will need 'puter to run it. Don't know what the spicer is, but bet you can't find a bellhouse for it and your new six. What's wrong with a SM465 4spd used from 68 to 90something? OR, maybe the later model OD NVG unit used now, if you can find the bellhouse for it. The bolt-up to engine is same for GM, but some clutches were hydraulic and some mechanical and other items to check on to be able to put in your truck.

Thanks all for your responses. GL, the spicer 3035A trans. was used by GMC in military 6x6 trucks. They cost between $300-$750 depending where you find them. Boyce equip. in Utah claims this trans. set a world speed record for manual trans. should be pretty rugged.
