Sometime in the future, I want to dump the old 216 with the crash box 4 speed, and install a newer 6 cylinder and transmission. I have a 46 1/2 ton. What combination would you recommend and why. I'm willing to go stick or automatic.
I figured I'd start looking for good rebuildable cores once I make a decision.
Oh yeah, rear end options as well.
All replies are welcome. smile
Thanks,
Possum

4 speed Saginaw or 5 speed T5 (overdrive) if you are going to change the rear end.

302 GMC is a fairly easy installation unless you want more engine. A small block chev is a logical choice for that.

The older, newer engines will be a easyer swap like Crenwelge suggested. A 235 or 302 might almost bolt in with a few minor changes.

The newer 230-250-292 will be more work due to motor mounts and crossmembers. With the 230-292's you can get parts at any local store, use about any transmission, and any late model rear axle. You need to decide what type of driving you want so you can gear it right, 3.08 to 4.11????

I like my 250 with T350 auto and 3.08 rear axle. It runs down the road at 70 mph and gets 16 to 18 mpg. Parts are easy to find and the swap was,t to bad. Joe

Like Joe has if it is going to be a "car", if it is going to be a "truck", use a lower ratio rear end and an overdrive trans.
