I have been told there are some clearance issues, I was told the transmission will hit on the body. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to change the engine because it performs so good. I currently have a 3 speed transmission, but would love a automatic transmission. A power glide is the only tranny that will connect to a '57 235 engine. As always thanks a bunch. | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | Actually, Langdons has an adapter plate that allows a 235 to be bolted up to a later GM automatic, like the 700R4. http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/howto/trans.htmThis would be a better choice over the 'Glide for a driver, as yu'll gain an overdrive gear for better economy and more comfortable highway rpm.

The TH350 or 700R4 gives you a nice low gear to start out on. | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 54 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 54 | I was always told the 235 engine didn't have the torque needed for a smooth operation on a 700R, is this true? Does the 200r4 meet the requirements better? Which of these 3 trannys should produce the best gas mileage and everyday driveability? Thanks guys, I did stop the power glide install.

I beleive that the 200 4R weighs less, and might be narrower in width, and I'm certain it costs less, but the 700 has a better first gear and is a stronger trans (GM used them in 3/4 tons trucks). Either one would be fine, although I would think the 700 would have a better in town performance due to the first gear.
