Hi Everybody,
I just wanted to check my information on timing a 56 235. The info I have inducates that the BB should "float" at the end of the pointer under the strobe of a timing light. If the BB is above the pointer then that is advanced, and if it is below the pointer then timing is retarded. Where do you guys run yours? slightly advanced or dead on. I also have the octane selector set to 0. Thanks for any advice you can give me. Jimmie.

Hi Jimmie;
Your info is backwards. BB below the pointer is advanced and above is retarded.

You'll get best mileage and performance when your timing is advanced as far as your engine will allow. That means, setting the initial timing "on the BB" then advance the distributor slightly CCW (this will advance the timing) and take it for a drive. Continue this little drill until it starts to ping under load. Then back it down slightly until the pinging goes away.

When I do this to mine, I can barely see the BB in the timing hole well below the pointer.

Thanks Guys,
It has been a long long time since I timed an engine. I will go bump up the timing a bit, then it's time for a little drive. Thanks again Jimmie.

I'm running mine 15 degrees advanced, however, I do not have a vacuum advance unit on my dizzy. I set mine with a Matco timing light with an advance dial.
