The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Powder coating

I just picked up my wheels from the powder coaters this afternoon. I had them blasted and coated to a color very similar to Bombay Ivory. When I picked them up they all had areas where it looked similar to orangepeel. When I voiced my concern to the owner he told me that it wasn't his fault that it was the wheels. He said it was something coming out of the steel that was causing the problem. To me it looks like it wasn't applied properly, looked like it was uneven. Has anyone ever heard of this or is this just an excuse for poor workmanship. I did have a set of 17 1/2" wheels coated white last year and they came out great. Owner said he would re-blast and recoat the worst one of the four to see if it came out any better. I guess I'll see how that turns out.

could be some contaminant in porous steel, but the surface condition of blasted corroded steel can result in an orange peel effect too - powder coating reveals every little surface flaw

I did ackowledge to the owner that I was expecting the rusted areas to show little imperfections but where the heavy orange peel was is an area with no rust.
Thanks for your input. I think I'll look for some new rims in better shape and try it again.
