They did a double heat-treat and some other modifications on a few to run behind big V-8's in their personal hot rods, but he said the average Saginaw wouldn't live very long behind a high-torque V-8. It might be OK with the 235.

Never used behind a big block, but was common with 275hp 327's and early 350's and in other GM models . 66-69 Corvair 3 spd and 4 spds,the gearsets were indentical in size and design to the Saginaw, some parts were interchangable.The 3 spd version,which used the same mainshaft, case and gears, appeared in 66 GM trucks and some cars.
The Saginaw is ok for street use in a moderate V-8,it's a lot cheaper than a Muncie and not all that much weaker in reality.I personally knew a few guys back then who drove hard and had no problems.Saginaw 3 spds are also used dirt circle racing low buck classes
I'm no Vega expert,but from some quick research, I believe the Saginaw first appeared around 1973 , 2 years after the car was introduced.It appears the 71 and 72 Vega used a GM German transmission from Opel. | | |

The guy I knew had a line of BS about a mile wide, so I always took his word with a big grain of salt! Back in my dirt track days, we used the Muncie box, behind some pretty hot 327's and 350's, usually in 2nd. gear on a 1/4 mile track. On longer tracks, some guys tried to run 3rd. gear, and usually split the case wide open! Putting the load at the center of the case, and getting on and off the throttle would do some serious damage!

Bill Check this page: http://www.racersguide.com/trans_ratios.html It has ratios for a whole buncha different transmissions. If yours is a Saggy with 2 bands, then it has the following ratios: 3.11 2.20 1.47 1.00 You can identify a Sagninaw by the reverse arm in the side cover. A Muncie has the reverse arm in the tailshaft. I run one of these in a 63 Nova with a 355 smallblock. It's ok, but I don't do any speed shifting. | | |
