I pressed the parking brake pedal this morning and pop!, the rod snapped off underneath. When I checked it, the rearward part of the rod pulled out of the clevis fork. This rod has snapped off short when we were trying to remove the clevis fork for cleaning, and we just used what threads were left and made the adjustments at the wheels to make up for the shortened rod.

I went to oldchevytrucks.com to see if hey carried the piece I need, and they have a 51 inch stainless rod listed bucks! Yikes!

Mine, however, is a two piece rod, with clevis connections in the middle and in the rear. My question is this: Were the '48's really two piece, or did a previous owner cob this together?

Wow! Thanks for taking all the pictures! Mine's similar, but not exactly the same as yours. I have one curved clevis fork and one straight one, and both are deeper than yours, which allows for more adjustment.

In one of your pictures there are springs laying next to the center joint. Is that where they hook on? I don't have any springs in the middle of mine. Well, at least there weren't any there when I got the truck. Where do the springs attach?

I think your brake rod is original. My '49 1/2-ton is exactly like yours. It's a two-piece rod with a curved yoke in the middle. The replacement part is very expensive, for reasons I don't understand. It would be easy to make your own from a couple sections of all-thread and a hack saw (if the original look is not important to you). The spring attaches to the center yoke and then backward to the frame cross-member.

Mine had the similar curved clevis which I substituted with ones available from Jim Carter. The rods are easy to cut/adapt rethread or as the above post make your own. The spring on the 3/4 ton attaches to the second clevis and the frame support to the drivers side of the carrier bearing cross member. I have it laid out in the picture like it attaches. There is a triangular plate on each side; the DS has a 1/4 in hole in it. There has to be a spring somewhere on the 1/2 ton for the system to work properly. I will look through my manuals and see what I can come up with and repost when I find it

My 54' 1/2 ton, although I don't much understand all of the system, has a spring.

I think I'll have to make something up. The rod doesn't have many threads left, having broken when we tried to loosen the clevis one time. We just cut it off. The threads in the clevis stripped out, which made the rod and clevis separate. One end of the rod is a "built in" clevis - no threads, just a small wishbone where the pin goes through to hold it to the pedal bar.

I'll have to find something to replace it at one end, then look on Jim Carter for the other wishbone piece.
