I have four painted hub caps for my 53. They fit and nobody seeems to want them. I picked them up at swap meets - cheap.

Did the common/working man 1/2 ton trucks come with these painted hub caps and the delux (5 windows) come with the chrome ones?

Just wondering.

There was very little chrome on the 53's. Industrial resources were directed to the Korean War effort. If you see a 53 decked out in chrome, chances are it was modified later.

I have purchased several of the painted caps on E-bay and noticed that some were painted over chrome. I guess the chrome hubcaps that were in stock at the time the switch were just painted and put on the 52 trucks. They were like that on 2 out of the 6 I bought. I just thought it was strange. I guess someone could have painted them after the fact but the paint job looked to good to be other than factory. I ended up having to strip the chrome off and repaint due to the amount of rust. Has anyone else run into this?

Good question. I wonder if the answer lies in the accesories available in 1953. Will be interested in the answer.

I have been hunting high and low for painted hubcaps to use on my 1953 and out here I have had no luck. The 1953 had a painted bumper and painted hub caps. Also my dash grill and glove box are painted and I have a maroon plastic pull on the ash tray. The lettered strip above the radio grill is also painted and the letters are white.
If you decide you want to do chrome let me know.
Mike

Please do your swaps by PM. Let's stick to the discussion of '53 peculiarities here.

Thanks,
Charlie
