The story is, a friend of his was changing motors and he got the 283. He went to the guys house and the guy started it up, he said it ran well. The guy shut it off and took it out. It has been sitting for 10 or 12 years, covered in a heated, dry garage. It has oil pan, carb. and dist., plugs and plug wires still attached. As some of you know I am new to this motor stuff, so Im' asking you for a ballpark $$ on it's worth. I want to put it in my '55 first series.

If it has a starter on it, you can get the oil system primed and then crank the engine over to get a compression reading.That can tell you a lot even though it will be a cold test as compared to a warmed up running test.
There is enough good in the worst of us and enough bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to criticize the rest of us.

Go visit your proctologist, steal his scope, and look inside the cylinders!

He went to school for automotive mechanics.The instructor gave the class an assignment with 100 points possible for taking an engine apart(50pts) and putting it back together(50pts).When the proctologist got his test score back he saw he had 150 pts.He asked the instructor how he got 150pts when there were only 100pts possible? the instructor replied;I gave you 50pts for taking the engine apart,50pts for putting the engine back together and 50pts for doing it all through the tail-pipe
