I'm thinking of rebuilding my original with a taller gear and disk brakes but I would like it to be as quiet as a modern diff. any experiances shared would be appreciated.

P.S. I have a 56 Sub,283, and am building it to get a lot of miles in its future. | | |

Going from to 3.08 gears lowered the engine noise too.

My donor 55 GMC rearend sat too long in the WA humidity, and looks like I'll only be able to save the center section as I will have to use a cutting torch to get the drums off. Hopefully can save the backing plates and brake parts. Most likely will weld the perches on the 48 rear, and swap the third-member and have a driveline built. Tired of replacing the front u-joint at $50 a pop. ANd I like driving it too much to leave it be. It currently is my daily driver, since fixing the accelerator pump in the carb, and since the Datsun is down for a brake rebuild.... But the 48 gets better mileage than the 94 454 Sub.... Gotta get the Datsun back on the road as these gas prices are out of control.... Garry

This stuff is fantastic at breaking loose rust! I've used it to free up engines that sat out in the weather for years. www.kanolabs.com Jerry

Also brought the RPMs down to make engine noise a little less. Then I put on new tires to quite the road noise.

I'm so pleased with it that I've located another Chevelle wagon which I plan to get the rear from. I have a '55 1st pickup that I'm told has a '58 rear under it. I've not idea what ratio it might be, but apparently it fit easy enough.
