Sure they work but they will amplify all of the signals crossing your antenna, noise and interfering stations included. Remember, the job of the radios internal workings or front end, is to isolate or pass the one and only frequency that you want to listen to and block out all other frequencies, so if your set is not a super sensitive radio then you will still get a bunch of hash coming through the speaker only louder. And the noise, forget it, that's broadcasting it self on all frequencies, FM’s the best bet here.
