They came with solid lifters but at least the later blocks were drilled for hydraulics. My '61 261 which is being rebuilt will have hydraulics. Someone else can give you more complete info. (I'm out-of-state now and can't check the info which I have in Montana. How did you come through the big wind yesterday?)

Ken, Yup, we're sitting on the shores of Hood Canal. Great crabbing and oysters but haven't dug clams yet. The big wind on Friday peaked at one of the highest tides of the year. The waves crashed over the bulkhead but it came through OK. You worry about your bulkhead because if more than 20% is destroyed, it is not considered a repair. It requires an environmental review with impact study to save your house. Our bulkhead is back on the high water mark and can't possibly damage the salmon, eel grass, etc. but you still never know where a review is going to lead.

Rusty, sorry for diverting the thread. I've told my engine guy that I don't need the 261 he's rebuilding right away since I'm in Wash. for a while and it will be a cold installation in the driveway when I get back. I probably should wait for a Chinook wind.....or June.

Thanks Wally
We came thru the weather just fine. Do you own a place here or visiting?
Regarding the 261, did you use a stock cam with the hydraulic lifters?

Am I right that Pontiacs in Canada had the 261 engine in them? Maybe the cars used hydraulics, so they made blocks work either way when using in cars too. Wouldn't you have to change the rockers to use those also? Would need to have adjusters that lock in place w/out a lock nut, like on V-8's wouldn't it? Besides, what's wrong with solid lifters? Specially if racing/hopping, that's what all the racers used to want in their engines in past.
I just looked at the Carter's sight listed above and went into the Tech link. It has a great story on this engine. It's listed a few times for some reason, they all looked like same article to me. I have one of these to build for my COE, thanks for info. All I mentioned above was in the article also.

Hey Grumpy
Pontiac's had 261 w/hydraulics and fibre cam gears. Rocker arms are the same. The link that Wally posted is excellent information for the 261.(Thanks Wally). You probably know all this GL.
I'm just wondering if the cam is the same for trucks with solids and Canadian Pontiacs with hydros.
Was there 2 different cams?
