I've read some of the posts on the subject, and would like to know if anyone has any good suggestions regarding removal/installation, the best size pipes and type of muffler. I'm looking for that nice sound I've read about. Never done this before, so all tips are welcome. Some folks say Fenton's are a bear to install but I think they're much easier, being in 2 pieces, than a stock exhaust manifold. Here's what I do:
Attach the 2 headers to the block with as few clamps (usually, just one per header) as necessary to hold them on. Turn the clips sideways so they hold the Fenton's on, but allow the intake manifold to slide in too. Then, put the intake on and use those clips on both intake and exhaust manifolds. Then go back and turn the original clips so they hold both manifolds.
You'll get a lot of opinions on which mufflers make the best sound. I used 26" Smitty's, available from Speedway and other vendors. I used 2" pipe all the way back. Sound sweet.
Have you only read about the sound a Stovebolt with duals makes? You're in for a nice surprise!!!

Also, do all your fitting and grinding before you coat or paint the headers. I have Patricks dual in dual out muffler and it sounds terrific. Super quiet at idle and wakes up about 2k rpm. I've also heard that 2 straight thru stock truck mufflers sounds good as well. Whatever you use, good luck!!! | | |
