Well, I picked up a 58 GMC this weekend and am having a bit of a problem with actual identification. The title says it's a 59. OK, not a 58...I can still work with it.

VIN identification on this site says it's a 61 (obviously not a 61)

However, the truck only has single headlights which says that it is a 57 (well, at least the fenders are).

Can you tell me where else to look to actually identify this truck?

Sounds like someone did some title swapping at one point.I once bought a what was supposed to be a 1956 Ford pickup,according to the title,later on the state police discovered someone had taken a 55 and a 56 truck and made up one to sell. However they used the wrong title. I guess if your VIN plate on the truck says it is a 1961 and the title has that same VIN on it it is legal. Just my guess.

The number cruncher on this site doesn't cover GMCs. Your number should be something like 101 P S1234. 101 means 1/2-ton short bed, P means Pontiac assy. plant, S means '58 or '59, the numbers are the production sequence. Lower numbers would be '58 production. Not sure when the change was. A '57 would have a T.

If your single headlights are in '59 fenders, it might be a fleet option truck .

Could it be that it was titled in '61? I've heard of people putting the year they titled it on the title.

My 49 was titled in 1950 and it shows that on the paperwork. The old farmer who bought it originally drove it around the farm before deciding/realizing it had to be registered.
