The ignition switch on my 66 chevy truck is acting up. Sometimes when you turn it to start the starter does not engage. Also, I'm trying to start it after the winter off and it will not start. It fired once, but does not other than that.

I'm wondering if the switch is the source of both issues. What do you think?

I've have similar problems with my 65. I just replaced the ignition switch and the electrical problems evaporated. The Bakelite was melted and the wires were shorting out intermittently.

When I replace it do I need to purchase the tumbler too or can I use my current one?

Thanks!

I had a bad ignition switch in my 52, so I took it apart and cleaned and sanded the contacts, good as new.
It is a little tricky to get apart, but with some patience and care it can be done. Not sure how different your switch is though, but worth a look to see if it can be fixed.

Use your current lock tumbler.

Yes, you can use the same lock cylinder, but make sure you don't have something else causing your trouble. Connections and starter solenoid trouble are not uncommon. The starter solenoid can usually be repaired with a kit.
