I have a 60 C10 that some time in it's life, the three speed was taken out and a four speed put in with the help of a torch. I'm going to put this back to original, I got another bell housing for it and I am trying to put a three speed tranny out of a seventies truck. The only problem so far is the front bearing retainer will not fit in the bell housing. I'm thinking I can take the retainer off and have it machined down so it will fit. Will this tranny work for me or should I be looking fot the right one. Any one got a match? | | |

It's usually necessary to make more than one modification, once you get started making changes.

The most that would have to be removed is 3/16. Who ever put the four speed in, took a torch to the bell housing and cut the opening bigger so it would fit. Any body else ever run into a problem putting a newer tranny in? | | |

Just don't concentrate on one part of the fit problem, and then discover there are other concerns to deal with. How about overall length, driveshaft yoke spline, rear mount, if applicable, etc.? All these things can be dealt with, but it gets frustrating, trying to make something fit that was not designed to bolt together.

I believe the bolt patterns are the same for both. It may be just a question of finding the right collar for your 3 speed and bolting it on.
