I have been working on a hesitation upon acceleration on my 261. part of it was carburator related but there is still a hint of it left. If I feel the distributor at rest I can move it in both directions and it feels real easy to move.

When I hit the gas I do see it move but not much, maybe 3/8 of an inch, then when I let off it kind of moves back but never all the way.

Is this just weak springs? How do I fix this?

Tony,

I had the same problem last spring. Luckily I had an extra vacuum advance mechanism - my old one barely moved the distributor. The good one greatly improved performance.

I might be misunderstanding your question because you also mention springs (for centrifugal advance?).

There is a diaphragm inside the vacuum advance (this might be bad).

I just assumed there was a spring that returned it back to the resting position? When I turn the distributor on my 235 it goes back into position as if pulled by a spring. The one on the 261 just kind of sits there and has much less resistance.

I actually have never had one apart so don't know.
