Managed to get ID plate cleaned enough to see that the stamped identification number ?? H53L002145.
My Kansas title for the truck indicates that the VIN is HAD58805. What's up? Any ideas?

Your title appears to be using a 1950 passenger engine serial number instead of the number on the data plate you found. Why? Read the tech tip and check your engine serial number.

Kansas used the engine number as the VIN through '55 as did most states.

what if the original engine is long gone?

Therein lies one of the big problems in changing engines, future titling issues. I think it's also the main reason the states went away from using the engine number. Every state has a process for resolving the issue. If you have a vehicle where the engine number was used but you don't have that engine any longer you'll need to contact your state licensing authority (where you get your tag/title transfered) to find out what their process is.
