Hi all, Im a newby here and just brought home a project that I was told is a 40 but there is no vin info at all that I can find. The engine number on the pad behind the distributor is HAD1134808. Any info would be appreciated and I would be very interested in aquiring a suitable title and vin plate. Thanks, Ron

read this thread If you use the search link on the members toolbar at the top of the page, you will find a lot of information that will be helpful to you. Just type in keywords IE: engine identification, engine id, what type of engine etc. Good luck and welcome to the bolt!

I think I can help with your engine number.

All of the info I am using comes from the Keith Hardy site of "Old Online Chevy Manuals". http://chevy.tocmp.com/index.htm. GMONIZ already sent you there if you checked out his thread.

Using the resto-pack info for 1950 passenger cars,

"H" is the designation for engines built for the 1950 year.

"A" is for passenger car engines.

"D" is a Flint engine plant designation and refers to RPO (regular production option) 317

I believe this engine was the 235 cu in and was the first year for the 235/Powerglide combo in Chevy passenger cars.

1134808 signifies the 1,134,808 engine built at Flint for that year.

Don't know if you have a 1940 truck or not. Check out the gallery here at the Bolt and find one that looks like yours.
