I have a '65 C20 with a 4 speed, you nearly have to stop to put in to 2nd and absolutely have to stop to put it into 1st. This is normal with the low gears that these trucks have. I usually double clutch downshifting to 2nd. You might change the grease in it useing a good 80/90 weight. That old grease in these gearboxes can get really raunchy.
