Hi Everyone,
Tonight heading back to the house from a fast food burger joint, the engine started to make a *pop* sound out the exhaust when accellorating up to about 3k. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the vacumm... now thinking about it yesterday I put in a hlaf tank of 89 (mid grade) gas in the tank. :o That might be the problem. :o
TIA,
David

Hi Guys,
I will check those out in the morning. smile Well almost as I left the house at 1:30pm, the truck started to *pop* out the carb with a little buck a few blocks from the house. Instead of turning around right then I figured to drive her a little more towards work, and if it didn't get any better, i'd turn around. Well within 3 miles from the house she was really running like cr@p. frown At the light at idle she would lope so bad not all of the cylinders were firing, and acted like it didn't want to run for very much longer. Also the steering whel, rea view mirror, basically the whole truck was vibrating real bad. On the way back to the house only on accelloration it would buck + cut out(engine miss), if clutch was pushed in it was almost normal, and if the truck was running at say 25mph it was fine, just when giving it the gas. I got the truck home (barely) under it's own power, then I called work to tell them i'd be running late. I go back outside to pull the truck inside the garage, when I got the truck about half way in the garage there was this nerve krindge(sp) high pitched squeel coming from the truck, but from where?
I'm thinking the engine is now toast.
What does a engine make when it spins a bearing, and how would that engine run? Also the garage smelled like it was running rich, but the carb is set leaned.

Tomorrow i'm checking the oil, see if all lifters move, compression, timing, also to see which way the new cherry bomb (glasspack is in which direction)that installed last sunday. Where's the arrow located at on these? Mine didn't have one.
TIA,
David

Hi Chevyboy,

There are several avenues you might want to persue. First, take off your distributor cap and check the pointer contact on the rotor. if the distributor chaft bushing gets worn and the rotor touches one of the plug wire contact bottoms, the plastic cleat that keeps the rotor pointer straight will break off and allow it to swivel on the rivit and arc to the contact at the wrong time causing it to fire at the wrong time so it could arc and fire with the intake valve open enough for the spark to go our the intake, burning the gas all the way to the carb. This seems most likely.

Then you need to check the timing advance. Hook a rubber line up to the advance at the distributor and suck on it. If you can't suck a vacuum, then the diaphram is bad and you won't get advance. Also, check your vacuum hoses - one may have come off.

You may have a stuck intake valve. Compression check will find this problem.

Your oil pump could be going bad and without oil pressure, your lifters won't pump up (if you have hydraulic lifters).

I can connect to the squeeling sound of the rotor contact scraping the contacts inside the distributor cap or the vaccuum sucking through a tight place or a gasket vibrating. I can't connect in my mind about a glass pack being on backwards. Most I've seen are straight through with little cupped out places to catch some of the exhaust and backwards would be like catching water in a funnel with the funnel upside down.

A spun bearing would probably have locked-up before you went as far as you did and it probably would have ran well until it quit. If you have a properly functioning guage or light and it didn't tell you anything, your basic engine is probably alright -but who knows, mechanical objects seem to have a mind of their own.

Hi Truck Tinker,
This morning i checked the muffler, it was installed the correct way. I tryed to check the timing with the timing gun, but it wouldn't work. lol I ended up turning the engine by hand, and it was timed correctly. I then ran the engine then shot some carb cleaner down the carb for a few minutes. It ran smoother, but still missed. I then started to pull the sparkplugs to see if they might be fouled out. #1 plug was wet, and crammed full of yuck smelling like carb cleaner. #2-6 were dry + flat black. I then changed #1 for #6 sparkplug to see if the engine would run different, it ran a little more smoother for just a moment, then started to run a little rougher. I have to admit that it was running alot better today than yesterday, but it stil makes the blop, blop, blop, blop, blop sound at idle with a sound of a lifter everytime I heard a blop sound.
Tomorrow morning i'll check all the things that you listed. smile
Many thanks,
David

Hi Guys,
Today I took apart the carb to check the float settings.
They were dead on, so I put it back together. smile
I then installed a new set of points set at .016, the little tab that runs on the lobe was worn on the old one, and then fired her up.
She ran alot smoother, but still had a miss here, and there.
I then adusted the fuel mixture a little outward, then realized that I richened the fuel mixture.
I then turned the screw inwards leaning it out a hair more than it was before I started.
I then installed 6 new R45 AC Delco sparkplugs set at .035. I then fired up the engine again. smile
She was running like a singer sewing machine.
I then had to take her for a spin to make sure she was fixed. grin
After I backed out into the street, I then went to take off in 1st.
When I did, I felt being pushed into the seat with a loud EERR!!! eek grin cool

Thank you guys for all your help, I could not have fixed the engine without you guys. smile
Many thanks,
David
