I'm 99% certain that I had all the critical pcs in the correct position when the cover went on. I have all gears except 2nd. I've had the cover off n on all day. It's near imposs to know if the line-up is correct when you get to that last 1/2 inch. But, I have a positive detent in all positions on both levers, but second will not engage. When I physically hold the lever in the 2nd position and helper releases clutch, it kicks out rather than engages. All other gears engage fine when using this method. I'm thinking that my shift levers and cover are installed ok and my problem is internal, possibly in the syncro? any ideas? | | | | | Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 55 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 55 | Just thinking about the 1% I could have screwed up. Is it possible to replace the cover with the lip on the gear on one side of the machined groove in the shift lever insted of being centered and still have the cover fit correctly? and maybe thats why I have 3rd and 2nd will not ingage? If that were the case would the cover even go on? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,513 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 1,513 | I’ll bet the gears moved slightly and the forks are not engaging properly when you’re installing the cover. The “hump” on the first/reverse fork must be at the rear of the transmission and the other one with the slot must slip over the ring on the synchronizer drum. Slide the gears back and forth and find the center of travel and then the cover should go on correctly. Here’s that page in the manual: http://chevy.tocmp.com/shop/1948_51truck/51ctsm0704.htm

I have the literature you reference, However it does not outline how to be sure that the match is made, I've tried to look thru the bottom drain hole to see if I've engaged, that doesn't work. After the cover becomes within 1/2 inch of closing it is apparently possible the sync drum moves after the 1/3 fork engages.I apparently failed this connection while the unit was on the bench, now it's on the truck and a real.....lying on my back, I laid there so long today the buzzards were circling overhead thinking I was supper! I'm considering pulling it tomorrow or coating it with a hvy grease to reduce movement Thanks! I'll keep U posted | | |
