The frame isn't really weak if its in good condition. The metal is thicker and there is more of it than many more recent cars and trucks in similar weight class.

People have done it, and one solution I though interesting was to use the sides of a spare frame to provide the fourth side. i will have around 350 hp. in the process of installing the rear suspension I removed the rear crossmember. I know this adds strength. but with it out you can twist the frame by hand and it is in good shape. I will replace the rear crossmember with a piece of tubing and fab up a hidden reciever hitch. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 | Boxing a frame is probably the most common thing done with a old frame to ensure it holds up to the stresses applied to it by upgrading motors, suspensions, and running gear in general. The "hotrod" and "streetrod" mags are full of this kind of information. If your truck is exploded to the point where it's nothing but material and time to make it happen then I would go for it. It sure can't hurt. Check out the old mags on this kind of project as they give many helpful insights into the little tricks like welding in nuts and mounting plates to make reassembly easier.
