Hello everyone -

I am doing some planning for when I install an IFS in the next month and I could really use some advice. (55 2nd series 1/2 ton)

From what I have read in past threads, it sounds like I should wait to purchase and install the steering column until after I get the IFS, the motor and the tranny in place. This way I can get the correct length column and to see what is really needed to get it hooked up right.

What do you all think? Am I on the right track?

Thanks!

Sounds like a plan.

Even if you use your original column, like I did, you need to wait till you get the steering gear box mounted before ordering the shaft and u-joints. Probably also a good idea to wait on installing the column till engine is in place, as you may need to change where it exits the cab slightly if it interferes with stuff.

You are right on track. When I did my 55 2nd series,I waited til it was all back together, then measured things up and bought a Billet specialtie steering column, and Borgenson joints and shaft.Things went together AOK.I now have a 65 Chevy pickup that someone screwed up the steering column. I am gonna take it out and visit the local salvage yard and put in a late model tilt column.

Thanks for the support.

I just got done taking out the old steering column, shift linkage and steering box.

Everything went smooth. I was also able to get the brakes disconnected.

Now I have to figure out how to remove the front end (leaf springs, axle etc.) so I can get it cleaned up and ready for the IFS.

The advice given is correct. The reason your IFS needs to be in place when you set your steering is because the IFS cannot be adjusted; it must be where it must be. With the steering shaft joints you will be using the shaft can be moved to accommodate the steer box.
