I have been searching all over the net, cannot get the code figured out from my engine. It looks original (but isn't) old generator, carb and all- but:

The code reads this: FI27C

Thats:
ef eye two seven see (not a one after the F)

There is every code listed with FA FB FC FH FG, but no FI listed in the world.

I need to find out what it is. Any help would GREATLY be appriciated!!!

Is this a stamped or cast number?

Maybe I'll just beg then, man I have HAD IT it trying to get this code figured out. I just wish someone could look and say "oh yeah, thats a 283 from back in 68." or whatever it is. I have to find out what it is, so i can get rid of it. I am a modern suped up 350 or 327 fan myself. Even a 396 would turn my crank- but not a 283- if thats even what I have.

hello sswap. that code looks like the one you would find on the right side pad at the front of the engine. the 'fi' you are looking at will tell you what plant made the engine. the 'c' usually tells the engine size and tranny.if you could provide us the block casting no., it will give us a point to start from to identify the engine, and the code you already gave will tell us the application. the block casting no. is located on the left side[drivers side] behind the head and on top of the block. it is cast right into the block. hope this helps. good luck

Like gary says, the way to tell what engine you have is to find the casting number. Its behind the driver's side head, cast into the block next to the bellhousing.

Go to Mortec.com and they have most popular casting numbers for SBC blocks. I ID'd an engine for a friend's car. Block code was 3914638, which was a '68 327. Those numbers on the front of the engine don't tell the whole story, as they were reused on different engines over the years. That 327 was thought to be a 283, because the "DH" code on the front could mean either a '58 Corvette 283 or a '68 Truck 327. The block casting number positively IDd it as a 327.

OH, BTW, the 283 was made from '57 to '67. The 327 was made from '62 to '69 or so. :p

Great!! Now, anyway to get the number from behind the head without pulling the engine?? Looks pretty nasty tryin' to get to it. This is in a BAD place for pulling numbers! If the grease is to thick, i may really have a problem.

hello sswapp. spray some gunk engine bright straight down behind the drivers side head and let it soak for a while. then spray it off with your garden hose[watch your eyes] and look down there with a small but strong flashlight. if you use bi-focals like me this is not easy ,but it is possible to see the numbers on most vehicles. you might also have a real thick buildup in which case you will have to use a thin , long handled brush down there to expose the numbers.i have also used a small mirror and a strong light to see down in between the firewall and the engine, only trouble is the numbers are backwards when you finally find them.good luck
