If I put the tank between the rails, where would the filler tube and cap go? Has anyone done this conversion yet?
Thanks for all the info in response to my earlier post.

A guy at Crusin the Coast here in Mississippi had a tank made with rear exit and used a fold down license plate bracket from 60's or 70's car. It looked sharp. I wasn't to thrilled with the 302 HO mistake motor in the truck though!

Behind the plate under the tailgate, or on either side of the truck in either fender or panel. It can go whereever you want it. I've see it all the time and everbody has it somewhere different or just a few inches different than the last person.

Only trouble i have seen with behind the plate with a 58 is you have to hang the tank a little low,it dont fill real quick and when full does the ole spray out the cap trick(remember at the drag races, even with a great cap they used to dump fuel but it was only 45 cents LOL). In the bed is cool with a brass boat screw on cap.But most put it in the rear fender, its high so you can fill it easy.

Moving the tank to the back is a great idea, but the position of the filler cap is the killer. If it's a show/cruiser truck (not actually hauling stuff) then Phat's idea of the brass/stainless boat type filler in the bed looks great, but don't run low when you have something in the back.
For those of us with fleetsides who want to 'use' our trucks hiding the filler seems to be a real problem.
Phat, what about using one of the stake holes in the back corner. Running a line down and over to the tank and then putting a screw on filler cap? Me thinks that would solve the hose in the box problem and still make the filler accessible.
Also, what about a Suzuki Samori or similar little 4x4 tank. Seems they sit between the frame rails on those things. Maybe a bit too narrow.
My 2 cents. smile

I was rust hunting the other day in a junkyard close by. I noticed that filler caps from a newer Pontiac and Chevy Minivan had a self rimming setup, so all you would have to do to put one in is to cut a hole in the fender and install it. It also had a cable hookup, so you could set it up like most new cars and not have to have a locking gas cap.
I also have pictures that I got from the 67-72 site that has it hidden behind a side marker light. If you all want to see it, have someone that can post pictures email me, and I'll forward it to them to post.

On my 37 pu , I made a small aluminum door to hide the cap access hole near the rear of the bed.The boat filler is a nice touch however. If you haul manure, remember to get fuel before shoveling in the crap. The fuel tank is located just in front of the rear crossmember. I welded in a rectangular tubing to provide a place to secure the straps at the front of the tank. Two more tubes are welded in at the top to give the tank a secure hold when the straps are tightened. The tank is about 2 feet from the rear of the bed and pushed up within 2 inches of the wood bed floor. It clears the axle by 2 inches in the front.Standing behind the truck ,you dont really notice the tank. Many sedans and SUV's have fuel tanks more exposed than mine made of 16 guage steel.

Hey Judd, that must have been the blue longbed stepside with the coke trailer behing it. Was a nice looking truck I even took a picture of it, THEN I noticed the mistake motor under the hood. Oh well.
